Commonwealth War Graves Steenbergen

(Netherlands, the - North Brabant - Steenbergen)

On a civilian cemetery in Steenbergen is the grave of Wing Commander G.P. Gibson and his navigator Squadron Leader J.B. Warwick.

On a plaque close to the grave is the following text written:

"A permanent tribute to the personal courage and devotion to duty of Wing Commander G.P. Gibson, VC., DSO., DFC., leader of the raid by No. 617 (Dambuster) Squadron Royal Air Force Bomber Command on the Mohne, Eder and Sorpe dams 16th amy 1943 and his navigator Squadron Leader J.B. Warwick, DFC.
Both officers lost their lives after operating as master bombers on a raid on Rheydt nr. Munchen Gladbach Germany in a Mosquito aircraft in which they crashed on 19th september 1944 near Steenbergen and are buried (together) in this cemetry.
