Markt 12 Museum
(Netherlands, the - Guelders - Aalten)
Markt 12 (Market 12) is both the address as well as the name of one of the three museums in Aalten of the association Aaltense museums. Markt 12 tells the stories of ordinary people in an unusual time, during the Second World War. Like Markt 12 itself played the bordertown Aalten in the war a special role. During the war Aalten had the highest number of absconding people in the Netherlands. These absconding people sat in Markt 12. But it is not just about absconding.
Markt 12 shows that every situation calls for people to make choices regardless of what country they come from or what religion they have, whether they are Dutch or German or they are Christian or Jew. In wartime, some people were deprived of their freedom of choice and the choices seem to others sometimes very black white, but nothing is further from the truth. Today our lives are shaped by the choices we make, some choices can change the rest of our own lives or the lives of others.
In Markt 12 you dive into the stories of several people who have made different choices: Germans and Dutch. You must literally search in the museum to the fullest possible picture of all aspects of the war. In Markt 12 you can do this together with peers from the other side of the border. The Second World War was the inspiration for the story, but it is more: the historical aspect is updated to the present and future.
